The Open Learning Centre offers part-time, distance learning courses aimed at people who are working, or are interested in working as trainers, instructors or educators. We offer well designed and structured courses presented by helpful and supportive staff. The programme structure allows students to study at a time and pace that suits their circumstances.

These courses are suitable to mature applicants from backgrounds such as:

• Vocational trainers;
• FÁS instructors or people wishing to pursue a career as a trainer in FÁS;
• Educational consultants;
• Human resource specialists;
• Those practising or planning a career as trainers in the educational, industrial, commercial, voluntary and community sectors.

Over the past number of years, students who have attended the programme have come from a wide range of areas including; Defence Forces, FÁS, Gardaí, Customer Service, Childcare, Hairdressers, Carpenters, Security Specialists, Driving Instructors, Training Specialists, VECs, ITs, Outdoor Pursuits, Writers and Artists.

Year 1: Essential Trainer Skills, The Individual Learner, Learning in Groups, The Learning Process, The Assessment of Learning, Skills for Life and Employment.

Year 2: Management of Training and Education, Course Design, Course Delivery, Understanding Communities, Introduction to Research in the Social Sciences, Work-based Project.

Year 3: Organisational Management: Human Resources, Social Science: Research Methods, Project Management, Contemporary Lifelong Learning: Policy and Practice for Training, Education and Development, The Virtual Learning Environment, Work-based Project.

Year 4: Critical Thinking, Applied Innovation Management, The Irish Administration System, Research Project.

Note: Modules of equivalent status may be offered on each year of the programme
