Structured PhD (Chemistry)--full-time
College of Science,
School of Chemistry
Course overview
All PhD students in the College of Science will enrol in a Structured PhD: www.nuigalway.ie/science/rgroups.html
The School has strengths in synthesis, structure determination, theoretical and computational chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry and polymer chemistry. Research activity within the School of Chemistry involves over sixty postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers in three main research clusters:
Analytical Chemistry: The research themes are concerned with the implementation of spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and chemometrics based methods for the development of new analytical methods. Application areas include bio-pharmaceutical and pharmaceutical production processes, environmental sensing, petroleum characterization, and materials for medical devices.
Advancing Medicine through Chemical Discovery: This research involves the development of new biomaterials for innovative drug delivery systems, new magnetic materials, and new bioactive compounds as potential therapeutics for areas such as cancer and infection. There are strengths in biomolecular chemistry, including drug design, synthesis and chemical biology.
Green Chemistry and Energy: Research is concerned with developing the fuels and green chemistry of the future. There are projects in combustion, biomolecular electronics, energy and environmentally friendly synthesis of small molecules and macromolecules.
