Course overview

The programme aims to familiarise students with some of the gripping movements, authors, texts and themes of one of the most multi-faceted literatures of modern Europe. It encourages students to broaden their intellectual horizons while providing them with the necessary skills in research methods and critical analysis, so that they learn how to deal confidently with research tasks. In the process they become articulate members of society capable of contributing to professional and economic activities in a wide number of areas.

Course outline

The programme is designed for students with an interest in German literature, culture, and language. In Semester 1 and 2 students will read and discuss selected German texts from the 18th to the 21st centuries, including poetry, prose, and drama. In semester 1 they will also be introduced to methods of interpretation and to relevant theories of literature and culture. The literature modules are accompanied by a year-long language course which will raise the students' language skills to postgraduate level. Dissertation topics are chosen in consultation with supervisors in Semester 2.

Part-time students will complete 50 ECTS of their taught modules in year 1 and one 10 ECTS taught module and their dissertation in year 2.
