Biography:

Margaret completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Trinity College, Dublin. Her PhD study, entitled 'An exploration of the relationship between exercise activity and psychological well-being' was awarded in 1998.

Having first worked in the private sector, providing  training courses  for business and community groups, she then worked a lecturer at Waterford Institute of Technology for three years.  In 1995 Margaret took up an academic post at NUI Galway and is currently the Programme Director of the M.A. in Health Promotion, and an active researcher with the Health Promotion Research Centre, a WHO Collaborating Centre. She was Chair of the national professional association, The Association for Promotion, Ireland from 2009-2012. Margaret is co-editor of a health promotion textbook, with Angela Scriven of Brunel University, London: Health Promotion Settings: Principles and Practice.

Her current research interests are in Workplace Health Promotion, in particular the effects of workplace mistreatment on employee health and well-being, and the development and evaluation of interventions to combat bullying and incivility at work. Recently funded research projects include the design and evaluation of on-line training materials for employees who have a brief in health safety or employee well-being (the 'Healthy Together' project) and an evaluation of the 'Choose Safety' project. 'Healthy Together' was funded by the EU Commission, and involved collaboration with University of  Reyjavik, Iceland and the University of Perugia, Italy. The 'Choose Safety' evaluation was funded by the Health and Safety Authority.

Previous research interests and publications include promoting health within the Travelling Community and healthy ageing.
